Between Here and There

‘Between Here and There’, by Flavia Birsan, began during my second art retreat in Italy, where I used it to demonstrate my layering process. When the workshop ended, the canvas was still unfinished. I rolled it up, travelled with it by train to Bologna and then flew back to Warsaw, where I completed it in my studio.

Shortly before the retreat, I had noticed a series of decorative columns in a restaurant that reminded me of Constantin Brâncuși’s Infinite Column. That shape found its way into the painting, a reminder that inspiration often appears long before we realise it belongs somewhere.

For me, this work is a reflection on creativity itself. We don’t need the perfect place or the perfect moment to create. We carry our visual language with us, and every place we visit, every conversation and every experience becomes another layer.
